That blonde is a principal investigator, how is that possible?
This lecture will take the audience on a journey through the evolution of Dr. Marcelino Rodríguez’s research career, from her early days as a student to her current role as the Principal Investigator. She will share her trajectory, beginning with her formative years in the university, where she laid the groundwork for her future research endeavors. She will discuss her doctoral work and early publications that set the stage for her subsequent contributions to the field of genomics. Attendees will gain insights into her innovative methodologies, including big data analysis and next-generation sequencing, which have significantly advanced the understanding of the genetic factors influencing diabetes and complex diseases. The lecture will conclude with a discussion on the future directions of her research, emphasizing the potential public health implications and the development of targeted therapies to improve health outcomes for individuals with diabetes and other diseases.
Itahisa Marcelino Rodríguez has a prolific academic career characterized by significant research and scientific dissemination. She has published more than 30 articles in prestigious peer-reviewed international journals. Her work on «The DARIOS Study» earned her the national «Magda Heras» award for the best publication by a young researcher in 2015. This collaborative study involving 11 cohorts demonstrates her ability to lead complex and large-scale research projects. Additionally, she has made over 60 contributions to conferences and workshops and has organized four significant congresses, including two international.
In recent years, she has increased both the quantity and quality of her publications as well as many of her skills in the field of data analysis, bioinformatics and genomics. She has led five competitive research projects, including a multicenter project. Her experience includes collaboration on more than 20 national and international research projects with prestigious institutions such as Stanford University, University of Carabobo, and University of Cartago. Additionally, she contributes to strengthening education and research in genomics, personalized medicine, and biotechnology through a collaboration agreement with the genomic division of ITER S.A. Currently, she is a professor at the University of La Laguna where, in addition to researching, she teaches. Regarding postgraduate training, she has co-directed two completed doctoral theses, both with maximum qualifications, and is currently directing four doctoral theses and seven undergraduate projects (2023/24).
Her passion for scientific dissemination is evident. As an active member of «Hablando de Ciencia» and «Jóvenes Investigadores de Tenerife» she participates in numerous scientific dissemination activities. Since 2017 she annually organizes the events «Pinta de Ciencia» in Tenerife and «Desgranando Ciencia» in Granada, reinforcing her commitment to the promotion of scientific knowledge in society.
